As India prepares to celebrate another Independence Day on the 15th of August, 2025, my heart is full of both pride and concern. The tricolour will fly high, patriotic songs will echo in schools, and social media will overflow with celebratory posts. For a day, we will all feel united as Indians.

But beneath these celebrations lies a question that refuses to leave me:

Are our daughters truly free?

I am Maninder Panesar, founder of the SheShine. My mission is simple but urgent — to empower girls and women with the tools they need to build sustainable careers, earn their own income, and live with dignity. Through the SheShine, we run a unique initiative called the 100% Free Digital Marketing Program, a six-month, in-house training designed to give women not just certificates, but real, job-ready skills. Trainees work on live client projects, handle deadlines, collaborate in teams, and experience the pace of professional work. By the end, they are either hired within our organisation or placed with companies looking for skilled professionals. This is not charity. This is empowerment. This is digital literacy that transforms lives. Yet, every day I meet women whose lives remind me that freedom on paper does not always translate to freedom in reality.

When Hope Meets Barriers

Recently, the SheShine launched a small awareness campaign in Punjab. The response was encouraging — more than ten families and women reached out, curious about our Free Digital Marketing Program. But every call came with both hope and barriers:

  • From Khanna: A woman raising her child alone while working a temporary job. She wanted to join but couldn’t commit to six months of in-person training.
  • From Bathinda: A housewife eager to learn, asking for online training so she could study from home. Sadly, our program requires hands-on teamwork and real-time collaboration, which cannot be replicated online.
  • From Barnala: A father who wanted his daughter in Class 12 to join, but academics took priority. His intent, however, showed how parents are beginning to value digital literacy for their daughters.
  • From Faridkot: A young girl applied through her mother’s phone. She was full of curiosity and hope. She promised to call back, and I silently pray that she does.

These stories are not rare. They highlight the silent barriers that continue to hold women back — barriers that government policies or social media campaigns alone cannot erase.

The Chains We Don’t See

When we speak of women empowerment, we often think of laws, financial aid, or quotas. But in my work, I’ve seen that the barriers are often far more personal and invisible: Household duties are still seen as a woman’s primary role, leaving little time or energy for skill-building. Many women need explicit permission to attend training programs. Their freedom is conditional. Even when the program is free, transport costs and safety concerns become obstacles. Families are often unaware of the real job opportunities that digital literacy and digital marketing skills can unlock. These are the hidden chains — and unless we address them, women empowerment will remain a distant dream.

Why We Won’t Switch to Online Training

A question I am often asked is: “Why not make your training online so more women can join?” The answer lies in the heart of our philosophy at SheShine. We don’t just want to create students with paper qualifications; we want to create professionals ready for the workforce.

The 100% Free Digital Marketing Program is designed to mimic a real workplace. Trainees sit together, work on deadlines, receive client feedback, and learn teamwork. This is where confidence grows. This is where hesitation disappears. An online video class cannot teach a young woman how to handle the pressure of a client revision or the pride of successfully completing a campaign. Our program is not about theory; it’s about transformation.

Independence That Lasts a Lifetime

For me, true independence is not celebrated on the 15th of August alone. True independence is when a woman tells me, “I no longer have to ask anyone for money.” True independence is when she spends her first earned income on her child’s schoolbooks. True independence is when she returns home after her first day of work — tired, proud, and free.

And this is what women empowerment means to me. It is not symbolic. It is practical. It is the kind of freedom that lasts a lifetime.

How to connect with SheShine?

If you know a daughter, a sister, a niece, or a neighbour who is eager to learn, guide her to us at the SheShine. Together, let us ensure her dreams don’t end at the doorstep of her home. Our 100% Free Digital Marketing Program is not just about jobs. It is about giving women the courage to dream bigger, the confidence to earn with dignity, and the digital literacy to compete in today’s fast-changing world. This Independence Day, don’t just post a flag emoji.

Don’t let freedom remain a once-a-year celebration. Instead, help a young woman claim her independence through knowledge, skills, and opportunity. Call or WhatsApp us at +91 7814992800, you can also write us at info@maninder.org. Together, we can build an India where women empowerment is not a slogan, but a lived reality. Because when our daughters rise, India rises.
